Personal Childhood Web

A web of the people from my childhood who loved, nurtured, cared, protected, advised and guided me. I would not be who I am today, if not for them.

My Dad-Lasisi
My father was very strict with my sisters and I growing up. However, he made sure that we understood the importance of education. We did not live in the safest neighborhood when I was a child and to protect us he put us in a private school. My dad helped me with my homework and whenever I got a good report card I was treated to Toys R Us or a restaurant mostly McDonalds! My dad may not have always showed that he cared, but I knew he really went out his way to provide a loving home. My dad influenced me especially in college. He made sure I would get a degree. He helped me pay my tuition which I am so grateful for till this day. His influence has inspired me to pursue a Masters because he always told me to never stop learning. Thank you and I love you daddy!

My mommy-Rebecca
My mom is one of the funniest, sweetest and caring woman I know. My mother gave up pursuing a higher degree to take care of my sisters and I.  She has done so much for my sisters and I since we were kids. She goes above and beyond her way for anyone, even if she just met you. She treated my friends as her own children. My mother taught me how to cook, how to carry myself as a woman, how to respect other people and how to love everyone. I will never forget anything she has taught me. My mother never picked favorites; she treated all her children equally. She has taught and is still teaching me everything I need to know to be a good wife in preparation for my wedding. I don't know what I would do without her. I love her so much!

Big Sis Sarah
Me and my big sister were not so close growing up. Maybe it's because I could not stand her telling me what to do most of the time since we were only a year apart. However, I always looked up to her. She is a smart girl, she was always at the top of her class and I strived to do the same. She always encouraged me to speak up for what I believe in.  I remember how she used to stand up for me if anyone would pick on me. I'm a stronger person because of her. We got closer in college and then when we lived together after I graduated. I admire her so much!

Lil Sis Janet
My little sister Janet has always been close to me. I think it's due to the fact that we shared a room and I wasn't as bossy as our older sister. Janet has a very sweet heart and she loves kids just like I do. As children we played a lot together and she taught me a few things. She helped me learn to swim and ride a bike. Till now she still helps me with so many things. She also taught me how to care for someone younger than me. I love her and I'm so proud of the young lady she has grown into.

My Uncle Jonathan
My uncle is my mom's younger brother. He came to America when I was born and helped my parents take care of me when they would go to work or school. He reminds me constantly of that special bond we have. When I was a child I used to call him my father sometimes, that's how close we were. My uncle was always at my school plays, concerts, track meets and graduations. He supported me in everything I did. Now he is supporting me as I prepare to get married. He is a great inspiration and I'm grateful to have him in my life.

  1. Dorcas,
the relationship you have with your mom is so close to the relationship I have with mine and even the type of person that your mother is. My mom is hilarious. I remember how my mother sacrificed so much for my siblings and I. She always encouraged us to go beyond what we thought we could.

  2. Dorcas,
I love, love, love your childhood web. I love how you talk about your parents and sisters. I am the oldest of 3 children, so I was the one that was bossing everyone around. Thanks for showing me how my siblings probably felt :)
